My “IT” List: Dewey Beach

My “IT” List: Dewey Beach

Today, I’m unveiling a new feature on Packed Suitcase: My “IT” List– a snappy roundup of my absolute favorite things about places I’ve been.

First to get the “IT” List treatment… Dewey Beach, Delaware!

This tiny .3 square mile stretch along Delaware’s Route 1 is found right between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach. While the aforementioned beaches are known for their quaint beach-town atmospheres, Dewey Beach is infamous for its lively, spring break vibe. In Dewey, there’s always a party to be found, but what I love most about going out in Dewey is that people of all ages (over 21, of course) can be found mixing and mingling in perfect harmony. Plus, Dewey’s wide sandy beaches are fantastic with lots of amenities like chairs and umbrellas for rent and shaved ice trucks roaming up and down the beach to quench a dehydrated sunbather.

The bottom line: Dewey Beach is a fun summer escape, and a weekend is the perfect amount of time to visit… but be careful, or you’ll leave with a little hangover!

Now, onto the “IT” list!

Place for people-watching: The people-watching along Route 1 is amazing. The snippets of conversation you’ll overhear recounting last nights antics are second to none!

Photo Op: At the Two Seas Restaurant, you can see both the ocean and the bay… the perfect place to snap a gorgeous sunset photo.

Place to Stay: Skip the hotels and if you can, stay in a house. Beach houses are all the rage in Dewey, and there’s even a big “summer share” market for those looking to visit multiple weekends during the summer.

Place to get steamed crabs: Ed’s Chicken & Crabs

Local Nosh: The crab cakes at Woody’s were absolutely decadent, almost like crab imperial with jumbo lump crab meat and very little filler. And, even better, they’re very reasonably priced at $14.50 for a huge crab cake on a brioche bun with their handmade Old Bay chips. Deal! (recently featured on the Travel Channel!)

Place to Grab a meal: Jimmy’s Grille is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere, let alone in just Dewey Beach. I love the open air layout- there are no walls- and the menu filled with comfort food staples like fried chicken and mac and cheese. And it’s very good hangover food… 🙂

Cocktail: Without a doubt, the cocktail of Dewey is the “Crush!” The classic is the Orange Crush-freshly squeezed orange juice, orange vodka, triple sec and sprite, but as this menu from Jimmy’s shows, the crush possibilities are endless!

Place to Eat Outside: Que Pasa’s. Gotta love the breezy waterfront location on the bay, and its delicious Mexican menu.

Late Night Nosh: Pizza! Either Grotto’s (my favorite) or Mama Celeste’s fit the bill.

Place to Hear Live Music: Live music is everywhere all over Dewey Beach, but the ultimate place to hear some live tunes is Jam Session at the Bottle & Cork, beginning at 5 pm every Saturday. Love it!

Me and Molly

My friend Molly and I enjoy the show!

Thing to Do: I’m a beach girl, so laying on the beach is the ultimate Dewey experience. Is that a cop out? If so, I’ll say Sunday brunch at the Starboard with its make-your-own Bloody Mary and fresh orange crushes. It never fails to draw a crazy crowd… and the brunch food is great, too!

Nearby Thing to Do: Take the Jolly Trolley into Rehoboth to enjoy the shops, restaurants and the boardwalk!
