Where in the World Wednesday: 5.25.11

Welcome back to Where in the World Wednesday!

The concept is simple:
We: Provide a riddle in the form of a haiku.
You: Try to guess the place described. Post your guess in the comments section.

Easy, right?

Later this week, the answer will be posted. Whoever guesses first gets a special shout out.

And, here we go!

Zeus watches over
    This island, halfway sunken.
        Twilight’s sun meets sea.

Do you give up?

Keep going…

You’re almost there!

This week, we’re in Santorini, Greece.

Looking for an explanation?

Zeus watches over: A nod that this week’s answer takes place in Greece, where Zeus, the head of the Greek Gods, is said to have ruled over the land.

This island, halfway sunken: Refers to Santorini’s famous caldera and the fact that the middle of the island appears to be sunken (a result of a volcanic explosion from long ago!)

Twilight’s sun meets sea: Refers to Santorini’s famous sunsets, where the sun looks to fall gently into the ocean.

Congratulations to Patrick M. on Twitter (@corktobelfast) and James (below) for guessing the correct answer!
