20 Apr Where in the World Wednesday: 4.20.11
Today we’re unveiling a new Packed Suitcase weekly feature… Where in the World Wednesday!
The concept is simple:
- We’ll provide a riddle in the form of a haiku.
- If you think you know the place described, then submit your guesses in the comment section.
- Later this week, the answer will be posted. Whoever guesses first gets a special shout out.
Without further ado, here we go!
City split in twoA squashed egg stands ever tallRed washed roofs prevail.
Where in the world are we?
This week, we’re in FLORENCE, ITALY!
Looking for an explanation?
City split in two:Refers to the Arno River that separates Florence’s historic city center from the Oltrano artist’s district.

A squashed egg stands ever tall: Refers to Brunellechi‘s Duomo, the centerpiece of Florence.
Brunellechi won the right to design the Duomo project by demonstrating how to make an egg stand on a flat piece of marble… He cracked the bottom of the egg and it was able to stand upright. The design of the Duomo takes inspiration from that squashed egg!
Red washed roofs prevail: Refers to the red, terra cotta washed roofs that coat so many of the buildings in Florence.
THANKS FOR PLAYING! See you next time!

Hint: You're a bit too far north.

Posted at 18:55h, 20 AprilIt's not Istanbul! You're a bit too far east.
Another hint: Both Budapest and Istanbul are on the continent of the mystery destination… so you're oh so close!
